One of the peace dividends from the ending of the Cold War has been the declassification of powerful satellite sensors and imagery. This imagery, which is becoming available for the first time commercially, will provide up to one-meter pixel resolution. This level of resolution was previously only available in more costly aerial photography, and then only as a one-off project. At the local government level, this remote sensing technology will open up new image-enhanced GIS applications, such as environmental monitoring, impact assessment, town resource inventory, public works planning, conservation commission planning, monitoring and reporting, open space planning, and emergency management, and offer the potential for more public participation in local issues. As imagery becomes more widely used as a mainstream companion to traditional GIS applications, it offers exciting potential for the introduction of new tools such as ArcView Image Analysis. This presentation will identify the potential new uses of high-resolution imagery in a local government GIS environment and share experiences from several new examples.
