During the summer of 1998, electrical power demand in the United States exceeded availability. KN Energy, one of the country's largest natural gas companies, recognized a unique business opportunity and initiated a rapid, comprehensive search to site locations for 10 gas-fired turbine electrical power plants. In a classic application of GIS technology, KN Energy GIS staff produced potential site location maps to support this endeavor. Utilizing a full range of publicly available data sources, both digital and paper, plus internal data, the initial site locations were established within an extremely short time.
