Although adding GIS capabilities to GPS projects seems to be a natural choice for GIS professionals, this is not always the case for organizations specializing in the collection of data using GPS techniques. They want proof that GIS will provide them with adequate benefits before investing in this technology. This paper focuses on how to develop applications that will easily convert GPS NMEA ASCII output to ArcView GIS point, line, and polygon shapefiles that can be read directly into ArcView GIS. Program development utilizes Esri's MapObjects technology on the Microsoft Visual Basic development platform.
