Cross-Country Mobility Modeling Using ARC GRID

Cross-country mobility (CCM) modeling involves determining the best route that a vehicle or vehicles can travel off-road to an objective or objectives. It also generally shows areas that a vehicle cannot traverse due to the limitations of the vehicle compared with the type and/or condition of the terrain. This paper examines cross-country mobility modeling using Esri's ARC GRID extension. The purpose of implementing CCM modeling using ARC GRID was (1) to see if it could be done, (2) to see if the automated CCM model in ARC GRID could approximate manual CCM models such as described in the U.S. Army ETL-0220 and FM 5-33 guides, (3) to apply sensitivity analysis on the model to investigate the sensitivity of alternatives to changes in the priorities of the criteria, and (4) to determine the relative usefulness of the CCM ARC GRID model implementation.
