Cartographic visualization is at a crossroads. Computers have freed us from the limitation of using static maps to present data. Static maps are unsuitable for illustrating the dynamic nature of many spatial relationships, and the ability to look at data in a variety of forms is becoming an increasingly important aspect of data analysis.
Cartographers now have many multimedia tools available to dynamically display spatial data--Hypertext, Java, Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), and Graphics Interchange Format (gif), to name a few.
Dynamic cartographic models are created by a GIS-generated database and transferred to gif animation format. Interactive visualization via Hypertext Markup Language and the Internet supports the transmission and display of the
animations. The presentation demonstrates the integration of GIS and computer cartography with scientific visualization. These animations illustrate the capability of cartographic animation as a visualization tool.
