A GIS-Based Cultural Resource Analysis for the Cape Coast Castle World Heritage Site, Ghana
Track:  Ecology, Conservation, and Archaeology
Author:   Douglas C. Comer
Cape Coast Castle was a node in the infamous slave trade. Here, too, cocoa and gold were exchanged for manufactured goods from Europe. As part of a resource analysis, the author constructed a GIS that displayed the locations of important historical and archaeological features; pertinent aspects of the environment like soils, topography, and hydrology; the location and condition of existing structures, roads, trails, and other facilities; and traditional use areas such as shrines. The GIS highlighted visitor opportunity areas, defined management zones, identified areas where uses threaten to damage cultural resources, and provided information for site planning, design, and management.
