Over the years, many counties have invested tremendous effort and money in creating tax map GIS databases. However, most of these databases are not accessible by the public for two reasons: (1) there is no readily available software that allows public users to manipulate the tax map GIS data, and/or (2) the tax map GIS and assessment database are not in the same (software) systems. Lancaster County Parcel Viewer, developed using MapObjects and Visual Basic, provides a simple solution for public access tax map information through either a portable parcel viewing software or a Web-based parcel searching application. The unique features of the system allow public users to search and display tax map and assessment information with a simple point-and-click interface. In addition, the system provides a cost-effective tool for distributing GIS data to the public.
