Internet Map Server (IMS) provides a mechanism for receiving and dispatching requests from a client Web browser to a MapObjects application, eliminating the need for any Web server programming but leaving a great deal of programming at the MapObjects application level.
The MapObjects application receives low-level input (strings collections) and is responsible for command parsing, performing map operations, and generating output. The commonality of this functionality suggests that a framework can be put in place in each IMS-enabled application, while leaving flexibility (for the programmer) for creating different output--be it HTML/JavaScript/VBScript or just a plain map--for customer-specific user interfaces.
This paper describes a strategy for identifying and designing reusable COM-based components for interaction with the Web link and map controls using MapObjects with Visual Basic.
