The purpose of the GIS studio taught by Margaret Carr, ASLA, and Paul Zwick, Ph.D., was to combine GIS and a unique approach to land use planning and create a sustainable plan for southwest Florida. The students conducted preliminary research on the four-county study area of Collier, Lee, Hendry, and Glades. The class was then split into three groups: conservation, urban, and agriculture. GIS was utilized to develop rankings for lands. Utilizing GIS, the class combined their plans and resolved land use conflicts. A final plan was negotiated and implementation strategies were presented.
