This project (funded by the Minerals Management Service, New Orleans, Louisiana) is designed to provide insights into improving the effectiveness of workable mitigation techniques and into the development of new mitigation techniques that can be used in regions where existing techniques have not been adequate. The primary tool for assessing habitat impacts and mitigation effectiveness is GIS analysis of historical aerial photography of select pipelines and canals coupled with a literature review, interviews with industry personnel, and ground truthing. The study area included several pipelines and navigation canals (which have met the selection criteria) in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
