Site selection of gas pipelines has been historically based on minimizing construction costs and increasing the efficiency of transport. This paper demonstrates how GIS can be used in the site location process to minimize impacts to the environment during construction or accidental release, as well as to lessen the permitting costs and liability risks. Ecological variables developed from publicly available spatial data sets are utilized in this process.
