The USFS is in the process of developing a modeling program designed to generate a sophisticated vegetation-type digital coverage. These models address CAL (Classification and Assessment with Landsat of Visible Ecological Groupings) vegetation type, size, and density. These models have the potential of generating accurate vegetation coverages now and in the future with little cost of recurring truthing. In this cooperative project, the Salmon River Restoration Council, using GPS and GIS, collected and analyzed information needed to assess the accuracy and improve the CALVeg modeling process in the Salmon River watershed.
