Evaluating Transportation Impacts Due to Enhancing Salmon Habitat Along the Snake River in the State of Washington
Track:  Transportation and Logistics

Studies are currently underway to evaluate the feasibility of lowering water levels in several dams along the Snake River to facilitate enhancing salmon spawning runs in the river. The resulting elimination of barge traffic may impact other modes of transportation in the State of Washington including rail, truck, and alternate barge routes for the transport of goods to and from the eastern Washington area. This paper presents an integrated approach to evaluating these potential impacts using three major tools: a linear programming module to MS Excel, MS Access, and ArcView GIS for analysis and display of results.
