Geospatial metadata is an integral part of an overall data management strategy. However, creation and distribution of metadata can be time-consuming and difficult. In order for metadata to take a significant role in GIS data management several things must occur: senior management must support the need for metadata and allocate needed resources to compile and maintain the documentation; an easy-to-use tool must be available to make the compilation and edit process as painless as possible; and a system of distribution to users and potential users must make the efforts visible and accessible. This paper discusses how these components have come together to create a resource that GIS professionals rely on and trust.
