Geographic information systems have been a staple of governmental information technology services for a number of years. Since the beginning the debate has raged about what type of GIS data should be made available to the public, for what purpose, and at what price. Seminole County, Florida, has taken a leading role in solving the "how" of distributing digital GIS data. By incorporating GIS, a wide area network, the County library system, and the Web, Seminole County is bringing the power and information available in the County GIS free to its constituent municipalities and the taxpaying public.
