"Synergy" refers to the increased results when individuals or groups work together. The demands and expectations of public service providers have been growing continuously with little consideration for budget constraints. In order to increase individual accountability, improve efficiency, and enhance customer service, they have turned to technology to improve coordination and thus the effectiveness of work done. An example of this use of technology is the City of San Diego's decision to be involved in the development of a work management system using the plant maintenance and service management modules of SAP, interfaced with full geographic information system capability. The SAP implementor, Bureau Van Dyke, and Esri are working together with the City as a demonstration of their newly developed compatibility. The Street Division of the City's Transportation Department hopes to go into production with this system the first part of 1999.
