Spatial Information Technologies for Agricultural Planning in Small Towns--A Case Study from Hokkaido, Japan
Track:  Agriculture
Author:   Ancha Srinivasan
In Japan, the need for improving agricultural competitiveness and restoring vitality of rural areas is widely recognized. The slow progress in integration of spatial information technologies, including GIS, GPS, and remote sensing, in farm resource management has been identified as one of the main reasons for low efficiency. With support from the local government in Hokkaido, the Regional Science Institute is developing two tools--a land information browser and a rice information system--to enable efficient farm resource planning. This presentation investigates the various functions of these tools and describes their benefits to agricultural decision making.
