The Bureau of Land Management's Red Gulch dinosaur track site in Wyoming contains thousands of Middle Jurassic dinosaur tracks, many in parallel trackways, throughout a 40-acre area. GIS is being utilized to unravel the complexity of track relationships for insight into individual and group behavior, community structure, diversity, and habitat of the track makers. Survey coordinate data is merged with descriptive data for each track using ArcInfo and ArcView GIS. Aerial photography at a variety of scales and close-range photogrammetric images are georeferenced for use in the analysis. The track site presents a unique opportunity to combine GIS techniques with paleontological research.
