The South Florida Water Management District completes approximately 550 stream gauging measurements each year to develop and refine rating curves and to calibrate ultrasonic velocity meters. The District realized that valuable data about stream gauging sites such as cross-section descriptions, schematic diagrams, travel directions, and other importation information was not easily accessible to its staff. By developing an interactive virtual stream gauging site book, data previously stored in three-ring binders became readily available to staff over the Intranet. The application, which was built using ArcView IMS, Oracle, HTML, and Java, allows users to select a site from a locator map, electronically enter and retrieve site information, and draw cross sections using the sketchbook applet.
