New generations of wireless communications systems require precise antenna placement. Typically, proprietary software is used for antenna placement and RF propagation modeling, resulting in limited distribution of data sets and urban models. However, we can now use ArcView 3D Analyst for demonstration, integration, quality control, and visualization of complex raster and vector data for cities across the USA. Three-dimensional building .shp files, digitized from aerial photographs, can be draped over bare earth DEM GRIDs and flooded, resulting in comprehensive three-dimensional models of urban areas. ArcView GIS allows attributes to be linked to buildings for improved planning and demographic analysis.
