Population and Demand Allocation Using Polygon Overlay Techniques

Typically, information regarding land use is in a separate cover from the demographics coverage. Rarely are the boundaries of land use or zoning types or service areas coincidental with the boundaries describing population distribution. Provided that the polygons are sufficiently small, assuming that the population is uniformly distributed within the demographics polygons produces acceptable results. However, even when demographics polygons are relatively small, they may be split by residential zone boundaries that represent different allowable maximum population densities. A program in ArcInfo cursors reallocates the population by proportioning across the various land use types.
