EDAW is developing an extension to ArcView GIS to track habitat gains and losses due to development and mitigation in the San Diego region. The extension will be implemented in every city and regional agency in the County. The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is directing the project with support from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG). The GIS-based habitat tracking tool will produce standardized reports, maps, and digital data sets. The outputs will be submitted to the wildlife agencies for aggregation on a regional scale. Each local agency in San Diego is preparing plans that state conservation goals by habitat type. The tool will monitor the progress in achieving these goals. The tool has an easy-to-use interface and does not require GIS staff to run. The target user is a staff planner in the local agency's planning department.
