Thin Client Computing and Server Farming: Innovative Technologies for Web-Enabling Your GIS
Track:  GIS on the Internet
Author:   Alain G. Grignon

GIS on the Internet has been in demand for some time and still the solutions at hand are not as refined as users would like them to be. With bandwidth limitations and licensing issues, fully functional GIS on the Web has been slow in coming. Until now, GIS on the Internet has been primarily a query and display environment lacking true interactivity. Thin client computing and server farming are two enabling technologies that can help address these problems. They allow for dial-up access to ArcView GIS from home or publishing a customized ArcInfo application, built using ODL, through a simple Web page. Almerco International Inc. integrates thin client and server farming technologies to offer a fully functional and cost-effective application serving environment. This paper explains how this solution is being used to optimize investment in GIS and details how any enterprise or organization can take advantage of this technology.
