The Army National Guard Bureau (ARNGB) has the combined task of training troops and managing installation land across the country. This requires consideration of available lands, the type of training to be conducted, and any environmental issues. Utah State University and the ARNGB have created an ArcView GIS package that allows trainers to evaluate soil conditions, minimum impact area for a particular weapon, location of plant or animal sensitive areas, and seasonal constraints when selecting an area for training. All possible sites will be ranked so the trainer can select the most appropriate location. Finally, this functionality will be made available across an Internet Map Server at Utah State University.
