Managing Hawaii's Aina: Using GIS for Military Training Land Monitoring and Rehabilitation Prioritization
Track:  Environmental Management
Author:   Nathaniel L Whelan

Military land management requires GIS integration for educated training and natural resource decision making, yet the fragile and complex Hawaiian ecosystem poses unique challenges. Natural resource issues, such as severe water and wind erosion, threatened and endangered species, and numerous archaeological sites, conflict with potentially high-impact training activities. Training land condition is determined through land monitoring utilizing a GPS-based field data collection system. ArcInfo, ArcView GIS, ArcView Spatial Analyst, and ArcView 3D Analyst analyze the voluminous field data to evaluate training areas according to land condition and prioritize land rehabilitation and maintenance projects.
