Learning WITH (and not about) GIS in K-12 Education

Despite scattered examples of successful implementation of GIS into K-12 classrooms, the widespread adoption of GIS technology in education has been surprisingly slow given its potential for enhancing spatial learning. The rate of adoption of GIS may ultimately depend upon the development of highly engaging problem-based educational materials that are aligned with emerging national curriculum and teaching standards. The focus of such materials must be learning with GIS and not about GIS. This presentation will focus on GIS-supported curriculum materials that bridge existing and innovative teaching practices and are easily integrated into current curriculum frameworks.
