The Center for Image Processing in Education is developing lessons to support and guide teachers and students in the use of ArcView GIS as a tool for discovery learning. The lessons present data relevant to science and social studies content and teach students how to create maps and query data to discover patterns and analyze geographic information. Lesson design promotes the use of GIS as a means to solve problems and answer questions. Professional development workshops designed around the lessons provide educators with theory and practice in the use of GIS as well as techniques for developing their own lesson projects.
