The Internet is redefining the nature of how spatial information is collected, managed, queried, and disseminated. New Internet services, specialized search engines, Web sites, and digital libraries can now directly support analysis, operations, and decision support. In this new Internet computing environment, spatial applications reside on large servers that are professionally managed and accessed through a network via a browser. A smaller number of large servers are used to consolidate databases, resulting in lower costs, improved reliability, heightened security, and dramatic quality improvements. This paper highlights the underlying Oracle and Esri technologies used to deploy low-cost, scalable spatial Web services.
