Battle Creek, Michigan, is located in southwest Michigan. There are 12 areas that are targeted for improvement projects. With over 300 lineal miles of road and utility infrastructure to be maintained, a GIS becomes a real need. Utilizing digital orthos and a digitized centerline, a project creating intelligence on the centerlines with pavement treatment was begun. This map was previously a paper map generated yearly, based on knowledge of which improvement projects had taken place. With GIS, a method was created for coding the treatments and generating maps, which are now easily updated. Other similar GIS Public Works benefits are being realized in the City of Battle Creek.
