Using an agency's existing electronic parcel basemap, FEMA's recently updated electronic flood zone and panel data, integrated into a MapObjects-based GIS application, it is possible to automate the process and reduce the time required from a few days to a few minutes. Working together with two Southern California cities, Psomas developed a MapObjects application that can be used as both a client/server and Internet and that provides a quick, easy-to-use tool for flood zone proximity determination. By leveraging existing data to provide additional services to their constituents, participating agencies continue to add value to the basemap data. Additionally, through their increased responsiveness, the agency's clients can move forward with their plans and projects more quickly, thus reducing the cost of development.
