In response to community interest, Broward Community College developed a certificate program in GIS. This project took two years and involved the commitment and cooperation of faculty and administrators from two academic departments, members from an Environmental Science Advisory Committee, and GIS professionals from industry and government. The resulting Advanced Technical Certificate included four courses: Introduction to GIS, GIS II (emphasizing spatial analyses and cartography), Remote Sensing/GPS, and Applications of GIS. Using anecdotal reports, this presentation will describe our experiences in overcoming academic, organizational, financial, and institutional stumbling blocks related to the development and implementation of the GIS curriculum.
