GIS Classes for the Masses: An Internal GIS Training and Educational Outreach Effort
Track:  GIS Organization and Management

The Illinois State Geological Survey has used ArcInfo since 1983 and until recently, most GIS-related efforts were conducted by GIS professionals. With the reality of desktop mapping, there's been considerable interest by many staff to become proficient with GIS software. In response to this interest, we are conducting a series of presentations and hands-on ArcView GIS training. The presentations addressed a range of issues (introduction to GIS, map projections, accessing existing databases, map production), and the training included exercises that were designed to address specific needs of students. This training effort was completed primarily using existing resources, and costs were minimal.
