Forestry Applications of Remote Sensing Within the ArcView GIS Environment

If you are involved with forest or ecosystem management, it is very likely that you have made use of some form of remote sensing data. It may have been simple black-and-white air photos, perhaps color infrared photos, or maybe even satellite images. Images acquired in a timely fashion provide the most up-to-date information available for an area, short of going there yourself. Remote sensing will never replace on-the-ground field surveys. However, a great deal of information is often missed when imagery and other ancillary data sources are not included as part of the management strategy. In addition, image data fills in the gaps where other data sources, including limited ground observations, leave off. This paper provides an overview of available and upcoming data sources applicable to forest and ecosystem management, presents semiautomated and automated information extraction and processing methodologies, outlines how to integrate extracted information effectively with other GIS data sources, and describes the benefits of various enhancement and visualization methods.
