Forest Fires and ArcView GIS--The Esther Lake Experience
Track:  EMS/Fire/Disaster Management
Author:   Paul Olson

This presentation will show how GIS, GPS, and infrared thermal imaging technology were used to manage forest fire suppression efforts on the Esther Lake fire in northern Minnesota. After a helicopter flight to record GPS coordinates of the fire perimeter, evacuation sites, and helicopter drop points, Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (DOQs) and Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) images were used with ArcView GIS on a laptop to produce a fire perimeter map, evacuation map, and transportation map. Later an infrared thermal imager and GPS were used to locate and map burning snags and hot spots. ArcView GIS tips on shapefile editing and fire perimeter mapping will also be presented.
