As part of Vice President Gore's sustainable planning initiatives, he announced that Dane County, Wisconsin, was one of six selected communities across the United States to help demonstrate how GIS can help assist sustainable planning efforts at the local level. In support of this County effort, LICGF helped develop a planning toolkit. This kit, called Planning Analyst, consists of five modules: (1) Exploration, (2) Analysis, (3) Allocation, (4) Impact, and (5) Public Access. These modules use existing GIS and visualization software with enhancements. Planning classes held in the fall of 1998 provided extensive feedback on the usefulness of Planning Analyst for citizen-based land use decision making.
