Automated Extraction of Area Features from Scanned Topographic Maps
Track:  Database Design and Automation

Extracting area features from a scanned map is straightforward if those features are represented using solid fill patterns. However, problems arise when areas are represented by a stipple pattern, for example in USGS Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) images. The purple pattern representing newly urbanized areas is converted to a grid with white cells mixed with purple cells for that land cover. This paper presents different ARC GRID functions used to extract areas from stippled fill areas on maps. These techniques can be applied to other scanned maps.
