The development of a sustainable livestock management system for natural rangelands requires addressing spatial factors. For example, livestock will utilize portions of a landscape at different rates as the function of distance to water sources or slope gradient. Forage production also varies spatially as the function of soil and rainfall distributions. An ArcView GIS application has been developed using Avenue to assist in rangeland planning. The application will compute the maximum livestock production under constraints such as maximum allowable erosion rates and protection of sensitive species. The paper will review the ArcView GIS application and provide examples of its use.
