Speech recognition has progressed to the point where Esri users in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Sweden are using speech recognition for collection of data to populate their databases. The paper will provide a comprehensive discussion of the state of the art of speech recognition with GPS and other sensors to create detailed ArcView GIS and ArcInfo coverages. The paper will highlight how Esri users are solving real-world data problems with the power and ease of use of speech. Examples from transportation, telecommunications, local government, and energy will be included in this informative and practical discussion.
