In compliance with a contract from the National Center for Education Statistics, a geodata and geographic information system was developed to link national Federal-State Cooperative System (FSCS) public library data to spatial, geographic, and selected census data sets. Using GDT, Inc., Dynamap/2000 street files and Wessex Profiler software, an ArcView GIS project was developed that linked certain 1996 census data, Esri USA data, and ArcView GIS spatial data to over 16,000 public library outlet locations. Subsequently, several software and demographic operations were conducted for selected public library systems including joining tables, adding tables, exporting revised ArcView GIS tables, and linking certain 1996 FSCS public library data to census demographics to obtain aggregate, average, and median computations on the chosen census data. Displays of the census data in the form of maps, charts, and layouts using ArcView GIS software were used to observe and analyze these data tabulations within selected standard boundaries and recognized legal service areas for public library systems. Based on this experience, feasibility analysis for presentation of this data via the World Wide Web was also conducted.
