Archaeological Spatial Databases for the Western United States
Track:  Ecology, Conservation, and Archaeology

Archaeological statewide spatial databases will facilitate explanation of similarities and differences among various past societies as well as allow effective land management in a multiple use environment. Few will deny this. Implementations of such databases are underway. This presentation examines the issues involved in these efforts. Legacy databases in nonrelational and nonspatial form are at once a strength and weakness for this implementation. Functional capabilities in GIS, including ease of use and database linking, will enable success of these efforts. A vision of where we need to go and a strategy for getting there will be presented.
