Geomorphic attributes of several small, forested watersheds were GIS-derived and then compared between the upper and lower coastal plain physiographic regions in Alabama. Using USDA Forest Service GIS coverages of stream order, topographic contours, and watershed boundaries, several classic indicators such as basin form, relief ratio, drainage density, channel frequency, bifurcation ratio, and hypsometric analysis were determined. The classic indicators addressed landform maturity, erosional processes, the drainage network, and physical basin properties. Improving our understanding of watershed geomorphology aids in understanding stream ecosystems and directs management/restoration efforts.
