Modeling Sediment Budgets in small Alpine Environments
Track:  Water Resources
Author:   Michael Brauner

The evaluation of sediment budgets has been paid increasing attention during the last years. This is due to the need for new technologies in assessing geomorphological risk against local development directives in the Austrian Alps. Our spatially and temporally distributed approach splits into two submodels, distinguishing hill slope and channel processes. Whereas the hydrological and geomorphological impacts of the hill slopes are modeled by raster processing, the channel system is represented as a network that is separated into homogeneous reaches based on semiquantitative expert knowledge. Coupling both models enables the delineation of endangered areas and the evaluation of appropriate countermeasures as well.
