This paper evaluates the use of directional commuting statistical methods with journey-to-work data to delineate Metropolitan Areas (MAs) and nonmetropolitan areas for the 2000 census. Avenue scripts were developed to draw commuting vectors from and to tract centroids. Based on all the vectors, the script then computes a resultant vector, which is a weighted mean of all the vectors. The resultant vector and other factors will be developed to create an automated MA delineation tool.
