To date, crime mapping and geographic information systems have been used primarily by law enforcement agencies as a tool for crime prevention. The Crime Mapping Research Center (CMRC) has recognized the potential benefit of GIS applications in the field of corrections. The Center is in the process of launching an initiative to examine the state of GIS technology and applications in probation and parole agencies and in correctional facilities. This presentation will review the current state of GIS and mapping technology in corrections. Presenters will also preview CMRC research projects in this area as well as explore potential applications.
