This paper summarizes the strengths, weaknesses, successes, and failures of a summer training institute for geography and earth science teachers held in July 1998. The paper uses a variety of data collection techniques, including case studies of individual teachers, to make recommendations for future in-service staff development initiatives. Barriers to effective training and long-term implementation of GIS in geography classrooms nationwide are identified.
