Spatial Database Engine (SDE) has proven to be a powerful and reliable platform for storage and retrieval of BellSouth Telecommunication's corporate land base. With the addition of tools to provide data entry, management, and output, managers are now focusing on ways to leverage the system within the corporation. One example of a tool designed to reduce the workforce needed to produce hard-copy maps is Automap 2000. Developed by BellSouth, this tool produces high-quality cartographic products on the fly. The system uses Avenue scripting to make SDE connections and to retrieve, filter, and map land base features. Additional Avenue code was written to create large-scale layouts and print using ArcPress. An HTML front end provides access to corporate customers. Embedded in the HTML is a Java applet that is used to collect customer information along with the type of map and area of interest. This information is then stored in a database, a queue is built, and a Dynamic Link Library residing on the map server obtains the request and passes it to the mapping program. The final product is a large-scale map ready to ship to the customer. Use of this application has proven to reduce labor costs associated with producing several standard mapping products. It has also reduced the turnaround time required to produce maps. Future modifications of the program will add to the number of map types it can process and will incorporate a commerce server to allow for transactions over the Web.
