Implementing Enterprisewide GIS in Telecommunications--It's More than a GIS!
Track:  Telecommunications
Author:   William P Geer

The successful implementation of an enterprisewide GIS is achieved when all organizations are linked together with a common technology and basemap that allows data sharing across the corporation. This is a tough assignment when the various groups involved use traditional CAD products, desktop GIS applications, and AM/FM systems. This is complicated even further if part of your enterprise is made up of pencil and paper records that are necessary to complete the GIS implementation. Traditional engineering organizations use a variety of CAD products to make the engineering process fast and efficient. Planning organizations may use a desktop GIS to plan for future growth, but they do not have access to demographic information to know what technology to put where. On the other hand, marketing may use a desktop GIS to perform analysis, but it does not have access to the engineering data showing what services can be provided where to make sound marketing decisions. Records management organizations use traditional AM/FM systems to add the inventory aspect to the graphic design of the facility layout. And finally, the rest of the enterprise does not have a way to view any GIS data. Providing the ability to manage data using SDE and delivering data to the desktop via the Web in a manner that enhances each department's operational capabilities and provides the necessary data sharing are the keys to success in a GIS implementation.
