This paper focuses on our experience in providing GIS-based site selection solutions for retailers for the past seven years. We discuss the evolution of the uses of Esri GIS software in site selection, from our ARC/Info beginnings to MapObjects and Internet solutions today. We will explain how we have "mixed and matched" suitable parts of several Esri software programs (ArcInfo, ArcView GIS, and MapObjects) to create an integrated solution. We also discuss the intricacies in designing GIS systems that can be easily adapted to serve the needs of various client groups, with special emphasis on serving data and software updates in a work group setting.
