GIS based Decision Support System for the Suitability Analysis of New Town

 

The primary purpose of this project was to build a system to logically support decision making for selecting the site for urban facilities by using the combination of Spatial Data Analysis and Decision Analysis. For many years, the overlapping method has been used to select the desired site. In the simple overlapping method, the different layers are overlapped simultaneously to get the common area. However, as more queries have been making the analysis complicated, logical methodology has become critical to give the best alternative.

This system was designed to give the rationality and convenience to the users rather than the ordinary GIS package. It was developed using Esri��s Arc/View 3.0A software and VisualBasic 5.0. With some extensions of Arc/View, more functions such as TIN and 3D Simulation could be added depending on the user��s preference.

 

�� Processes are followed below :

1. Generate the database for analysis and establish system environmental configuration
2. Exclude the area related to restrictions by laws or other conditions
3. AHP Analysis
4. Recommend possible alternatives after analyzing with additional factors
 

  This system was developed to satisfy the need to support decision making for site-selection in the field of urban planning. It is expected to be utilized in analyzing complex and multidimensional situations in many ways in urban planning.

  For the theory, Decision Analysis was adopted to give the rational alternative in this system. Decision Analysis is the methodology to study how to choose the best one among several alternatives in an uncertain situation. In Multi-Criteria Decision-Making field, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used for supporting decision-making in this system. AHP works by decomposing information into a hierarchy of criteria and alternatives. The information is then synthesized to determine the relative rankings of alternatives.

  Steps of AHP :
1. State the objective of the decision process & build the structure in the form of a hierarchy
2. Form the pairwise comparison matrix by comparing decision attributes
3. Compute the relative importance weights among decision attributes
4. Recommend the possible alternatives satisfying
