Role of the Surveyor in the Digital Age

This course will be offered in two parts:
Part 1 - Sharing Your Electronic Files will examine the positive and negative aspects of sharing your electronic files for use by other professionals in the GIS, planning and construction process. We will also review the recent industry trends regarding uniform standards for publication and sharing electronic files. The course discussion will include mechanisms for determining what to include with the files and what information should be excluded. Specific examples including survey control, accuracy and precision considerations will be examined.
Part 2 - Electronic Seals and Signatures will examine the purpose of the surveyor's seal and signature. What do they truly mean? We will review recent court rulings which have direct impact upon the use and misuse of electronic seals and signatures. The course will look at current and pending legislation regarding e-signatures, their use, and their application to the surveying profession. We will also discuss the differences between imaging and electronic certifications.
